Wenn man von San Telmo (oder auf Mallorquin „Sant Elm“) aus Richtung Westen aufs Meer sieht weiß man sofort woher die Dracheninsel Sa Dragonera ihren Namen hat. Wie ein gewaltiger schlafender Drache liegt die 4 Kilometer lange und ca. 350 Meter hohe Felseninsel nicht weit vor dem Strand der westlichsten Ortschaft von Mallorca.
In nur wenigen Minuten ist man mit dem Tauchboot an einigen der spektakulärsten Tauchplätze, die Mallorca zu bieten hat. Zwischen den beiden Enden Cap Llebeig und Cap Tramuntana erstrecken sich vor allem an der Nordseite der Insel fantastische Tauchplätze, die zu dem Spektakulärsten gehören was dax Mittelmeer zu bieten hat.
Sofort nach dem Abtauchen ins kristallklare Wasser, das mit Sichtweiten von weit über 30 Metern und Wassertemperauren von bis zu 29 Grad im August und September so manche Südseedestination in den Schatten stellt, ist unübersehbar welche Auswirkungen es hat, dass Dragonera 1995 von der mallorquinischen Regierung zum Naturpark erklärt wurde. Da seitdem hier nicht mehr gefischt werden darf hat sich hier wieder eine einzigartige Flora und Fauna entwickelt, die es heute Tauchern ermöglicht, das Mittelmeer in seiner ursprünglichen Form zu erleben.
Taucht man hier mit einer der wenigen Tauchschulen ab, die eine Lizenz für das Tauchen im Naturpark haben, erlebt man Tauchgänge der Sonderklasse. Bizarre Felsformationen, Grotten, Höhlen, Canyons und faszinierende Unterwasserlandschaften bilden die Kulisse für einen unglaublichen Fischreichtum. Begleitet von den allgegenwärtigen Barrakuda Schwärmen, kann man zwischen Zahnbrassen, Mönchsfisch-Schulen und beeindruckenden Zackenbarschen auch Langusten, Einsiedlerkrebse, Bärenkrabben und Muränen überall entdecken. Wer Glück hat sieht auch verschieden Rochenarten, Mondfische oder sogar ein Seepferdchen.
Gelegentlich schauen auch ein paar Delfine vorbei. Im Herbst kommen dann die Sardinenschwärme und in Ihrem Schlepptau kann man schon mal gewaltige Thunfisch- oder Stachelmakrelenschwärme auf der Jagd beobachten. Auch Nachtauchgänge zum Beispiel im Canyon von Tramuntana 2 bieten eine unglaubliche Artenvielfalt von nachtaktiven Meeresbewohnern wie Drachenköpfen oder Oktopoden.
